Notes & Assignments 1/29/09

hi all- good to meet you today. looks like you're going to be a fun group.

your assignments this week are as follows:

1. visit one or both of the following art exhibits: fred sandback @ david zwirner (525 w.19th st.) or labyrinth @ exit art (475 10th ave.). choose one of the shows as inspiration for a custom display typeface you will draw. draw the 26 letters (uppercase, lowercase, or a combination of the two) + numerals 0-9. base the letterforms on the art you see. these are two very different shows. sandback is the essence of minimalism, labyrinth will give many forms and styles to play with, as well as the labyrinth concept itself. you may present your work in a notebook or on sheets of paper.

2. read pp. 12-33 of thinking with type. there will be a small quiz on this material, mainly dealing with what is discussed on the handout given today.

3. write a hello post here so i know you've gotten signed in.

Hello World!

hello students of noah hilsenrad's typography 2 class!

this blog will serve 3 functions:

1. a place to receive/review new assignments
2. a place to post completed assignments
3. a place to put your own ideas and encounters with design and typography

i expect each of you to use this blog for all 3 functions. throughout and at the end of the semester i will track your individual activity here; it is an efficient tool for gauging how much work you’ve actually done.

shortly after the first class you should be receiving an email invite from me asking if you'd like to join the blog. if you don't get it please email me at the address on the syllabus.

cheers,
noah
