Notes & Assignments 4/16/09

hi all

great work on the posters. lots of good progress. please post your two final posters here on the blog. as i said, if this is not done you will lose a full letter of your grade.

a reminder: WE ARE MEETING AT 18 WOOSTER ST. (DEITCH PROJECTS) NEXT THURSDAY FOR CLASS, AT 12PM. do not go to our regular room.

your assignments for this week are as follows:

each PERSON is to create ONE small collateral piece for their festival. make one of the following:
• 4" x 6" Postcard, 2 sides
• T-shirt, 2 sides (bring in your design on two pieces of 11x17 paper)
• 5" x 5" Promo CD sleeve, 2 sides, with 4.75" CD
• 30 sec. Flash/After FX promo piece, saved as Quicktime
these pieces must have the following info: festival name/logo; venue name & location; main dates; artist lineup with dates & times. all members of the group have their choice of any of the pieces.

each GROUP is to create ONE large collateral piece. make one of the following:
• 6 section foldout poster (both sides), minimum 24"x20"
• 12 page booklet (front & back + 5 spreads), minimum 5"x5" page.
this piece must contain all the information collected last week, i.e.: 10-20 performer lineup w/dates & times; artists bios w/URLs, album names, & record labels; venue information w/address, directions & special instructions; ticketing info; general festival info.

your real challenge is to create and use a grid for the large collateral piece. keep in mind...
HIERARCHY, whose element are font/typeface, alignment/indentation, position, size, space, color
GRID, whose elements are page size, margins, columns, horizontal guides, modules, fixed content zones (i.e. navigation), rules (lines)

Homework question!

Hi Noah,

Gelsey and I were wondering if we needed to include the band info for all of our artists (there are 42 bands total playing at our festival!!) Should we just include 20 or so?

Notes & Assignments 4/10/09

hi all

your assignment this week is to pick one of the 10x16 posters you created last week and create 2 revisions of it. (so each person should have 2 posters again.) because of the mishaps last week, if the poster is not trimmed to 10x16 it will be considered incomplete.

ALSO- i forgot to mention this in class...

i want to you each begin collecting/creating content for the next step in this project. therefore, in addition to the posters please bring in the following, printed on 8.5x11 sheets in plain text:
- the band/artist names* of 10-20 performers who will be in your festival lineup.
- a 1-paragraph biography of each artist (this can be found or created, or even 'lorem ipsum' text); include artist website URLs, album names, and record labels
- date & time EACH of the artists will perform on various stages
- venue information (address, directions, special instructions on how the festival is organized in the space)
- ticketing info, i.e. festival pricing, location for ticket purchase, etc.
- general contact info for the festival (email addresses, phone numbers, URLs)

the more complete the above, the less you will have to do the following week. trust me.

* (for the soundtrack festival use film names and composer information)

my kettle

i feel that the previous logos have been a little too emo for our audience so i made something a little more heavy, i am not saying this is the one but i like it.

The Well - Logo revamp

Gelsey and I decided on a totally different route for our logo:

We chose this "w" drop as an illustrative reference to the well from the Yavapai myth, deciding that it better fits in with our typeface and illustration choices.

As for typefaces: we are sticking with Birth of a Hero (the sans typeface with a crooked lower-case E, if you remember) for our title text, but are hand tracing it to get rid of the distressed features and bring out a more hand-made feel that fits in both with our logo and our illustrations. For our copy text, although we LOVE Archer (the very delicate typeface that sort of resembled Rockwell) we are reverting to Rockwell since we could neither creatively justify the usage of Archer nor READ it when it was lower than 14 point (it's VERY thin!).

We've produced some more line illustrations as well as watercolor palates that we can scan in and work with.

We are moving forward with our poster designs, which we are pretty pumped about! They will be unique, but all four will likely incorporate illustration and watercolor motifs.

Ok, that's all for now! Feedback would be great :)

Notes & Assignments 4/2/09

hi guys, great concept kickoffs yesterday.

your assignments this week.

as teams:
finalize festival logotypes. choose supporting display & text faces. begin gathering/creating visuals.
(some groups should email me their logotype revisions or post them here by monday night. you know who you are.)

as individuals:
design two festival announcement posters EACH. the posters must have the following information: name of festival (i.e. the logotype), its dates, location, and some words chosen from the lyrics you gathered. you may design the posters alongside each other, but i want all posters to be unique.

see you in a week.
